Arabia and their designer Tove Slotte created a colourful design for Tove’s Jubilee series to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the artist and creator of Moomins, Tove Jansson. In addition to the mug there are three different sized jars in the jubilee series. Tove Slotte combined elements of different original illustrations. The original artwork is found in Tove Jansson’s comic strip #18 Moomin and the Golden Tail. The main inspiration for the design came from Tove Jansson’s book The Dangerous Journey. “The image of Thingumy and Bob is a combination of images, partly from the book Dangerous Journey and from Finn Family Moomintroll. In the image Hemulen is serving them milk. The colouring of the characters is the same I used in the 2005 mug picturing Thingumy and Bob”, says Slotte. The mug pictures several inhabitants of the Moomin Valley celebrating in the garden. In the particular story Susanna loses her glasses. Through her new glasses the world looks quite different. The glasses are important to the story, and therefore a pair of glasses were painted on the inside of every sixth jubilee mug. There’s also a special bottom stamp in each mug; the logo of Tove 100 jubilee year. For each mug sold, two euros were donated to Unicef to support children’s education all over the world.
