Moominpappa got his new mug in 2014 and this time the background colour was dark blue. The mug was discontinued in 2022. The mug was designed by Tove Slotte, and it pictures Moominpappa sailing on his boat under the starry sky. The original artwork is found in Tove Jansson’s comic strips #2 Moomin and Family Life and #3 Moomin on the Riviera. “I started drawing Moominpappa based on some old comic strips, but the department of approval at Moomin Characters asked me to adjust my design from both sides; his snout and eyes, for example. The panel in the comic with Sniff standing on the beach, and a second one in which Moominpappa is sitting with Snorkmaiden, have been a great starting point for this design”, says Tove Slotte.

Who designs the illustrations for the Moomin mugs?
Tove Slotte, born in 1957, is a Finnish artist and a graphic designer. She is a professional ceramist. Tove Slotte worked at Arabia from 1985 to 1990, after which she has worked as a freelance designer. She is best known for designing and illustrating the Moomin products for Iittala and Arabia ceramics. Tove Slotte has been a Moomin fan since her childhood. She says her favourite Moomin book is The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My. Tove Slotte has designed the Moomin products for Arabia for more than 30 years.
